Berchtesgaden...Proof That Beauty Always Outlasts Evil
We traveled to Bavaria to a town called Berchtesgaden for our last non-travel day. It was only a few kilometers from Salzburg, but a completely different looking place. It was more in the mountains and it was a tiny town of 8,000 people. Berchtesgaden (and the surrounding areas) are known in history as Hitler's territory. He had two houses in the area and most major people in the Nazi party took up residence in the mountains around Berchtesgaden (Hitler's is called the Eagle's Nest). Here is a picture of the town:
We originally went to go up to the Eagle's Nest, but when we realized that it is expensive to get up to it and it's now a restaurant, we skipped it and headed to Berchtesgaden National Park, which was the best decision we made on the whole trip because we ran into Lake Konigsee:
We took a boat to the other side of the lake:
Where we got off the boat and hiked a little bit:
Until we got to Lake Obersee:
After a day of hiking around and staring at this incredible place, we went out to dinner and ate some wiener schnitzel:
It was a fantastic day and we are so grateful for cameras that can remind us of how beautiful that place actually was.
